How to become an Animal Caretaker
Employers prefer to hire individuals who have had a bit of previous experience with animals. However, most of the training will be on the job. One of the prerequisites is, of course, to be compassionate when dealing with both the animals and their owners.
Caretakers will begin by doing basic tasks and can eventually work up to positions that require more responsibility and experience. Some animal caretakers may receive training before they enter a specific position. For example, pet groomers often complete an informal apprenticeship, usually lasting 12 to 20 weeks, under the guidance of an experienced groomer.
Many zoos require their animal caretakers to have a bachelor’s degree in biology, animal sciences, or a related field.
