How to become an Animal Lawyer
Undergraduate studies could be focused on animals, such as animal sciences, which can provide students with a special skill set that may assist with securing animal welfare internships and jobs before, during and after law school. The Law School Admission Test, or LSAT, will then need to be taken.
Some law schools offer workshops and clinics in animal law, which may focus on animal protection issues. These workshops give students the opportunity to gain animal welfare-focused clinical experience that may include legal research and analysis, writing skills, litigation, negotiation, and advocacy. Students also get the opportunity to work alongside animal welfare attorneys, helping them conduct research and represent clients.
After completing law school (typically three years full-time/four years part-time), students will need to take the bar exam in the state in which they want to practice.
