How to become a Barista
There are no specific guidelines for this position. However, a high-school diploma or equivalent is preferred. There are also special education opportunities available for those who are serious in pursuing this field.
Classes and workshops are typically a few days long, and they cover multiple levels of being a barista, from learning the basics about coffee to unique and tough blends. There are also workshops available for those that are interested in opening their own coffee shop or turning their skill into a business.
Baristas should have general knowledge of different coffee bean roasts. It is essential to be very attentive and be able to quickly take orders and interact with customers courteously. Baristas must have excellent communication skills and appear neat, friendly and reliable.
There will be situations where a customer may complain and the employee must be able to resolve the issue in a calm and professional manner. Baristas must also be able to keep up with rush hour, as many customers will enter the store and all of their orders must be filled in a timely manner.
