How to become a CFO
CFO's come from various backgrounds. Many CFO's were previously controllers or treasurers who took the route of:
- attaining a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Business Administration or Accounting
- getting a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation
Alternatively, many CFO's in the medical, educational, or public sector professions have degrees pertaining to their original occupation, and have worked towards gaining additional training specific to the tasks of a chief financial officer.
For example, a CFO in the educational sector would typically have a doctoral degree in educational administration, and would have continued with further training in order to qualify for a CFO designation.
