How to become a Controller
A controller will need a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Business Management, Finance, or Accounting.
Certification exams can then be taken to attain a Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation. Note that work experience will be a prerequisite before taking the exam. In order to maintain certification, continuing education courses and training programs must be taken.
It is advisable to look at the type of company you would like to be a controller for. If the company is multi-national, then international accounting experience will be needed. If the company is a manufacturer, then cost accounting experience will be necessary. Study the types of companies that interest you, find out what their business model is, and what accounting skills they are looking for.
