How to become a Counselor

Most of the counseling education programs have a common core, with each specialty having its own unique elements. It would be wise to have a conversation with someone in the specialty you are interested in to glean more information.

Earning a master's or doctorate in either psychology or counseling psychology is the most common route. All counselors must obtain licensure before they can practice, and also need to accumulate a certain number of work hours and pass a standardized exam (requirements vary by location).
