A search engine optimization specialist needs to have experience in web design and web content production. One to three years of experience with online marketing is a must, as is knowledge of CSS, HTML and various programming languages. A bachelor's degree in communications, information technology, marketing, or business is recommended.
Many SEO positions will offer on-the-job training but will still require some post-secondary education. Keeping up with recent changes in the SEO field requires ongoing education by attending conferences and workshops, watching online informational webinars and training videos, and by reading credible blogs.
