A naval engineering degree encompasses the design, construction and maintenance of ships, off-shore platforms and on-shore support facilities. Students are trained in these areas, as well as in building and designing war vessels or civilian marine transportation systems. Naval engineering degree programs are often offered through a school’s mechanical engineering department.

Individuals should choose a school and program that offers training in the specific areas of naval engineering that they are interested in. For example, an aspiring naval engineer may be interested in yachts, or in powerboat design, while others may be interested in war vessels. Students should ensure that their school of choice is accredited by ABET, Inc., (formerly the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). Many state boards and certification associations require formal education from a school that has ABET accreditation.
